Fun Friday: We’re Oklahoma’s third-best small company to work for!

Woot woot!

About a month ago we told you that QuiBids made the shortlist for one of Oklahoma’s Best Places to work! Well, we’re excited to announce that we took third place in the small company category at last night’s banquet, hosted by okcBIZ magazine! It’s a little step forward from last year’s third-place finish, but we couldn’t be more excited to be honored by our peers in the Oklahoma City business world.

Thanks again to okcBIZ for hosting the annual Best Places to Work competition! Be sure to pick up a copy of their July issue to read their profile on us! If you’re not in OKC, you can read it over at their website!

But most importantly thank you customers for helping us build QuiBids into one of the state’s top businesses! We couldn’t have done it without you!

Happy bidding!

Announcing: The QuiBids redesign!Starting today, QuiBids‘ fresh,...

Announcing: The QuiBids redesign!

Starting today, QuiBids‘ fresh, new redesign is available to all customers!

We previously opened the new look up to a small handful of customers for testing purposes, but now it’s ready to go for the public at large! Here’s what you’ve got to do:

1. Click on the top-left icon that says “NEW: See What’s New…”

2. Be dazzled by our streamlined, faster website!

We’re excited to say that the summer 2012 redesign provided much more than a mere makeover. We took the time to build useful new functionalities into the site, as well as improve its parts that weren’t quite up to snuff. The end result is a much smoother, faster QuiBids, one that’s simultaneously better for browsing customers and those who know exactly what they’re looking for!

So go ahead and take a few minutes to read up on the improvements and additions we made to the site — it’s yours to use, after all!

An improved search bar

Finding products on QuiBids is now easier than ever thanks to our fixed-up search bar. We’ve installed a way smarter, faster system to power it, and we fixed it right at the top of every page on the site. So now all you’ve got to do to find for your next big win is look up!

Product pages

One of the goals of the redesign was to improve QuiBids’ shopping and browsing experience, so we built product pages for every item we sell! The product page is where you can go for items’ descriptions and specs, the listed value, shipping cost, auction statistics and most importantly: all scheduled auctions for the specific item. Now you can plan around upcoming auctions instead of bending your schedule to suit ours!

More extensive auction statistics

Are you the cautious, calculating type who tallies up the most likely times of day that you’ll win an auction? Now determining factors like ending prices, bids spent, and total amount paid are as easy as scrolling to the bottom of an item’s product page and having a look for yourself! Use all this information to spend your bids more effectively!

More specific sorting options

Looking up auctions on QuiBids used to require a bit of guesswork, even if you knew exactly what you wanted. Now specifying the results of a search (or a general category, or even the whole site) is as easy as Display, Sort, and Filter! Are you just looking for a product page or an actual auction? Soon-to-end auctions or most popular items? Maybe an auction that comes with a Gameplay? All these categorizing options are now available to you!

A beefed-up Watchlist

With plenty more space and the ability to drag and drop auctions, the Watchlist is now a far more practical, useful tool! Using the aforementioned categorizing features and the drag-and-drop, you can keep track of dozens of auctions simultaneously.

The drag-and-drop

You know how auctions are all lined up as their own separate little modules? Well now you can drag and drop them anywhere on the auction block, rearranging them as you like! Group auctions together by your level of interest, your likelihood of winning, or whatever other factor you want!

The icon legend

Wondering about those little icons that appear when you hover your cursor on top of an auction’s title? Well scroll down to the icon legend at the bottom of the page to find out what they are!

Happy bidding!

What are Hybrid Auctions?Short answer: Hybrid Auctions contain...

What are Hybrid Auctions?

Short answer: Hybrid Auctions contain both a product and a specified amount of Voucher Bids.

Aren’t you glad for short answers? Because there’s actually a lot more to the long answer if you care to get involved with it. And since that’s what blogs are for, we’re going to dive headlong into the long answer here, though I suspect the majority of readers came here looking for the Cliff’s Notes version.

What those readers will miss is pretty vital though, so stay tuned if you’re looking to get the most out of QuiBids. Here are a couple of quick facts about QuiBids Hybrid Auctions that’ll streamline your shopping experience.

1. Your account will be credited with your won Voucher Bids once you pay for your auction.

You won it, so go claim it! Since the Voucher Bids are part of the prize, you’ve got to pay for it in order to use them in the next auction. So pay for your item quickly and jump back into bidding!

2. Hybrid Auctions are different from Gameplay Auctions and auctions for Voucher Bids.

Don’t get your auctions confused! Gameplay Auctions are auctions with prizes that come with a Gameplay (more about those below). Bid Voucher auctions are exclusively for Voucher Bids. Hybrid Auctions are separate from both of these!

3. You WILL get the Voucher Bids in a Hybrid Auction if you choose to Buy Now.

This is slightly different from auctions that include Gameplays. Because Gameplays have no monetary value, they are not included in the Buy Now price. But since you do pay extra for those Voucher Bids, they’ll be included.

Bonus question: Which is more valuable — a Gameplay or Voucher Bids?
This is going to go down as one of those ages-old questions, right up there with Chicken vs. Egg and If A Tree Falls in a Forest. While I’d probably get fired if I told you to go after one instead of another, I will say that the two are generally pretty comparable unless you’re just really, really good at QuiBids Games. And in the words of Forrest Gump, that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

Product Spotlight: Ivanka Trump Alexandrite Satchel

So…purses! As a girlfriend-less dude with only so much fashion sense and a perceived social stigma about any item one “totes” around, I know very little about them. But thankfully, there are plenty of awesome, fashion-sensible ladies who work in QuiBids’ product office who gave me the skinny on this particular item we’ve been auctioning off lately: the Ivanka Trump Alexandrite Satchel.

First off, it’s a handbag in the satchel style, which means (I’m told) you don’t really carry it over your shoulder. It’s more of a wrist thing. It’s got a main compartment for your wallet, phone, and sunglasses, comes with a logo-engraved ornament on the front, and even includes nifty hidden magnetic closures! What more could you want from a purse?

Anyway, here are the quick hits on the last 25 auctions for this particular satchel — you might find that you can own one of these for far less than you’d have expected!

The average ending price on auctions for the satchel was $1.63.

While this might be telling of where you should start bidding to win this particular item, I’d recommend trying to scoop it up early. A whopping eight of these 25 auctions sold for $.01, $.02, or $.03, so several of these purses are sneaking under QuiBids’ customers’ radars. 18 of the auctions ended at a price of $1 or less, so strike early, when the iron’s hot.

Users that didn’t get locked up in a bidding war spent about 16 bids to win the satchel.

Assuming those bids are all Real Bids (and not Voucher Bids), then the average user who avoids intentionally trying to outbid a bunch of people only spends about $9.60 to win a purse valued at $175. Not bad at all.

Winners saved an average of 91.6% on the satchel, across the board.

Even with this guy, who only took a 17% discount, factored in, this is a pretty darn impressive item from a pure savings perspective. And if you’re lucky, you might even scoop it up for a mere penny like Meredith here did.

How do you pronounce QuiBids?

Earlier this week I was in lunch a meeting with several of QuiBids’ executive staff. They’re all really nice guys, in their late twenties and early thirties, and after each person in attendance (there was one representative from each of our company’s departments) introduced themselves and explained just what they do for QuiBids, the execs opened up the floor to questions.

One employee asked where the origin of the company’s name first appeared. This dovetailed nicely with a recent realization I’ve experienced working in QuiBids’ public relations office, and that’s that people — by and large — don’t know how to pronounce the name of our company properly. These two things dovetail because the name’s origin is much simpler than you would think, and directly informs how to pronounce “QuiBids.”

“It’s just a combination of the words ‘quick’ and ‘bids,’” our CEO, Matt, told us.

I’ve broken it down diagnostically for you below:

Also, I recommend the following promotional video (which we keep posted on the educational QuiBids 101 section of our website) if you need further assistance

And yet, despite all the evidence in favor of the proper spelling, people regularly butcher “QuiBids.” Don’t believe us? All it takes to find out is a short stroll through the multitude of QuiBids strategy and tips videos on YouTube.

The most common offenders are “Cue-bids” — which makes us think we’re about to play a game of billiards — and “Kwee-bids,” which vaguely reminds us of Skee ball. “Cue-bids,” you’ll see, is slightly more common:

And Kwee-Bids:

We even stumbled across a “QuizBiz,” along the way, which confused us just as much as anything.

So there you have it. QuiBids is pronounced “KWI-BIDS,” as in “quick bids.” Thankfully these folks all got it!

Happy bidding!

Fun Friday: Your NBA Finals playlist

The Miami Heat tied up the NBA Finals in Oklahoma City last night at an even 1-1, and while that the QuiBids office (which, you might recall, is located about five miles north of the Thunder’s Chesapeake Energy Arena) a little bit down this morning, we know the Thunder will storm back into Miami at full force when they start Game 3 on Sunday.

In the meantime though, we’ll be cheering for our team a couple of different ways, and you can join in on the fun too!

Earlier this week we set it up so that you can Profile Pic(k) this year’s NBA Champion over at the QuiBids Facebook. Pick the winner correctly and we’ll issue a promotional code that’s good for free bids!

We also built a super-fun app that’ll let you spruce up your Facebook profile picture in honor of the Finals! Add a James Harden beard, a pair of goofy Russell Westbrook glasses, or LeBron’s headband!

And lastly, since Sunday’s a long, long, long ways off, we put together a little soundtrack of songs to get you there and get your NBA Finals fix along the way. Here are a bunch of the best songs with the names of this year’s Eastern and Western Conference Champions in them. It’s also worth noting that in assembling these playlists, I noticed the general trend that “thunder” skewed a little metal while “heat” toward cheesy ‘80s pop.

Anyway, check these songs out on the YouTube embeds or via Spotify below!

“Canned Heat” — Jamiroquai

“Thunderstruck” — AC/DC (obviously)

“Heat Wave” — Linda Ronstadt

“Continuous Thunder” — Japandroids

“The Heat is On” — Glenn Frey

“Thunder on the Mountain” — Bob Dylan

“Heat of the Night” — Paulina Rubio

“Thunder” — The Runaways

“Just a Little Heat” — The Black Keys

http://bit.ly/McaOT5

“Blood and Thunder” — Mastodon

http://bit.ly/McaOT6

“Heatwave” — SBTRKT

http://bit.ly/McaMe3

“Thunder” — Rusko

http://bit.ly/McaOT7

“Heat of the Moment” — Asia

http://bit.ly/McaMe8

“The Thunder Rolls” — Garth Brooks

http://bit.ly/McaMe9

“Disco Heat” — Calvin Harris

http://bit.ly/McaOTa

“Thunder Road” — Bruce Springsteen

http://bit.ly/McaMeb

And while you’re at it, you may want to check out a few great QuiBids products that you can use to listen to this stuff!

Do you know Stevie?

He’s a new friend of ours, one that we’re proud to introduce to you! You see, “Stevie” is the affectionate moniker for the trophy given out by the American Business Awards every year. Or, trophies, rather, as a host of different companies are awarded for exemplary business practice in 44 different categories. They are:

-App Awards

-Company/Organizational

-Customer Service

-Human Resources

-Intelligence & Technology

-Management

-Marketing

-New Product

-Public Relations

-Website

This year is the tenth annual installment of the Stevies and QuiBids (after finishing as a finalist for New Company of the Year for 2011) is up for the year’s Fastest-Growing Tech Company award for companies that employ up to 2,500 people! We couldn’t be more excited about it! Our site’s been live for a little less than three years at this point, so to be honored twice so early in our existence like this is — well, we feel a lot like another young Oklahoma City-based team that’s enjoying a lot of success in their early goings!

We’re in the running against seven other companies; five are California techs (Epicor Software Corporation, FireEye Inc., iolo technologies, Quality Systems Inc., and YouSendIt) and two are based on the east coast (C2 Technologies Inc. and Verivo Software in Vienna, Virginia and Waltham, Massachusetts, respectively) so we definitely feel a bit like an underdog. The vast majority of tech companies start up out on the west coast, so it’s an honor and a privilege for us to get to represent the Midwest on the Stevies’ national stage!

Astute readers might notice that this isn’t the only distinction QuiBids recently garnered. Just last month we were named one of the 30 Best Places to Work in Oklahoma by okcBIZ magazine for the second consecutive year! Last year we finished fourth in the Small/Medium Companies category, so we really hope to improve on that showing at the Best Places awards banquet later this month!

Several of our executive officers also traveled to Tulsa to accept another award in April when Oklahoma City newspaper The Journal Record doled out their annual Innovator of the Year honors. The program was built to recognize trailblazing work by Oklahoma businesses, individuals, and non-profits alike, so you can imagine our excitement to be considered in such high esteem by our peers.

We won’t find out where we finished in the running for this year’s award until September 17 when the Gold, Silver, and Bronze honors are handed out at the new tech awards gala in San Francisco, so stay tuned to the QuiBids blog for the big announcement!

Product Spotlight: Portable iPod Boombox

Remember that time John Cusack rolled up the sleeves of his trench coat, hoisted a boom box over his head and won Ione Skye’s heart with a rock song?

We realize that we lost some of you with the word “boom box,” but that’s OK. All you need to know is that it’s a terribly romantic movie from the eighties, codified in the public consciousness as the film with the above-mentioned image of heartfelt teen drama. Behold the glory of Phil Collins.

This moment would’ve been impossible without the aid of that ‘80s antique. While it’s now unfortunately passé, the boom box had its moment — once upon a time it was an indelible image of cool. Don’t believe us? Check these out:

While we’re not going to try to revive this dated but awesome machine, QuiBids does sell a smaller type of boom box updated for the modern, iPod-wielding era. The Portable iPod Boombox comes with a remote and lately, we’ve been selling them for way cheap.

How cheap? Well, of the previous 33 auctions for these things, the percentage of savings has averaged up to an astounding 93%. In fact, more than half of the auctions for the Portable iPod Boombox end at $0.03 or less. These are the items we call “slam dunks” around the office.

Of the 33 auctions, the ending price ranges from $0.10 to $1.67. The $1.67 auction however, is something of an outlier, as the most expensive auction before it only ended at $0.23.

Nine of the 14 auctions with additional prizes (either a 1X Gameplay or an additional 20 Voucher Bids) ended at less than $0.10, which isn’t enough — in our professional opinion — to dissuade customers from bidding in Hybrid Auctions. Many do avoid these auctions, fearing that the increased prize will attract more bidders. But it’s certainly not always the case. Four of the remaining five Hybrid Auctions ended between $0.10 and $0.19, and the expensive outlier auction was the fifth. Excepting for the last one, all the Hybrid Auction winners walked away with 90+% savings.

Check out the graphic below for a little more insight into what prices auctions for the iPod Boombox were ending. Happy bidding!

Be the next QuiBidder of the Week!

Are you a QuiBids regular?

In the nearly three years since we opened up shop, we’ve generated a devoted following that’s spilled over into the QuiBids Facebook and Twitter profiles, as well as a handful of other great social media platforms we inhabit. Just like we’ve got returning QuiBidders, we’ve got returning QuiBids Facebook and Twitter users, in part thanks to our daily and weekly promotions where we give away free bids.

above: Lena G, a recent QuiBidder of the Week

You can sign up for our Daily Sweepstakes via Facebook, but there are other ways to score free bids and join in with our customer community online! The biggest one is signing up through Facebook to be our next QuiBidder of the Week. All it takes is a quick form, a photo of yourself, and a quick writeup explaining your QuiBids story and strategy.

We’ve had 19 winners so far and each one gets a $50 gift card of their choosing if they’re selected! Let’s have a quick look back at some of our winners’ strategies.

Lisa D.
Lisa relies on the Buy Now to turn bidding in auctions into a no-risk proposition!

Greg W.

Greg steadily worked his way up from gift cards to jewelry and then eventually some pretty high-dollar items, like a Tom Tom GPS and Oakley sunglasses. Celeste K. did the same thing!

Patricia S.

Patricia mostly sticks with gift cards, but she didn’t just work her way up. She accumulated them until she could buy an HD television with gift cards alone! Now there’s a strategy!

David Di Franco, Jr.

In addition to being one of our most outspoken fans, David’s put together a ton of different guides to success on QuiBids, including a handful of YouTube videos and his own eBook, “QuiBids Tips on the Quick.” Check them out at his website.

Bryce S.

Bryce stays away from really crowded auctions, which has served him well in winning a high volume of not-so-expensive auctions.

Those are fewer than half of our QuiBidders of the Week! Be sure to check out guidelines before you sign up and good luck in your quest to become QuiBid’s next QOTW!

6 HUGE QuiBids Australia wins in May

Did you know that QuiBids operates in Australia?

In the slightly modified but still immortal words of Kel Mitchell, “We do we do we do we do we do we do we do-oooooo!” Down under’s the third market where we opened shop (after the US and then Canada), and we’ve got new customers signing up there every day, which we’re super-excited about!

We think they are too, judging by the customers returning to the site because of big wins like these. Let’s see who got the best deals in Australia in the month of May.

Item: Global Master Chef 7-Piece Knife Block Set

Price: $0.04

Winner spent: One Voucher Bid

Savings: $449.95

Here’s this month’s winner for biggest savings, pictured above. This handsome knife set runs from an eight-centimeter paring knife on up to a bread knife that’s nearly three times as long. There’s nothing that battlestar007 won’t be able to chop now!

Item: iHome iD85 Clock Radio Dock

Price: $0.10

Winner spent: Three Real Bids

Savings: $148.09

Why does waking up have to be so hard? One way to make it easier is to set your alarm to play an upbeat song you love. One that’s bright in tone — maybe some Paul Simon or Cut Copy — certainly helps your case, and user TYGARPOW’s soon to learn the benefits of an easy wakeup call now that he/she’s won this iHome dock, which can play music straight from your iTunes library!

Item:
HP Photosmart All-in-One Printer

Price:
$0.15
Winner spent: Three Voucher Bids
Savings: $168.84
“Where do you go for your printing?” is not a question that gary620711 will have to field anymore, as he’s won himself an in-home print kit that’s small enough to fit under a desk but powerful enough to produce lab-quality photos. It also works as an effective copier and scanner!

Item: NeoPAD Touch Screen Tablet bundle

Price: $0.30

Winner spent: Seven Voucher Bids

Savings: $139.69

Need a mobile command center but can’t fork over the money for a retail-priced iPad? Lolly79 saved almost the whole retail price of this NeoPAD Touch Screen that does almost all the same stuff, plus all the capabilities offered by an inbuilt keyboard!

Item: Apple TV

Price: $0.23

Winner spent: One Voucher Bid

Savings: $139.69

Cinephiles — also known as movie geeks — tend to be very particular about the quality of the pictures they watch, which is why they love them some Apple TV. It shows live sports, content from Netflix, YouTube, Vimeo, and way more, all in 1080p HD. And all that for a measly Voucher Bid? Well done, i8urbaby. And FYI, we’re going to decline your invitation to bring our kids over to watch the big game at your house.

Item: 250 Voucher Bids

Price: $0.11

Winner spent: Four Real Bids

Savings: $147.49

While we recently pointed out that bullies and “power-bidders” tend to go after Voucher Bid auctions, a few slip through the cracks, to be scooped up by savvy users like mrchevius here. With all those bids, you could’ve won every single one of these six auctions…and found yourself with 231 Voucher Bids to spare. Dang, that’s crazy!
